April 4 - Mini Masters

(on the mini side)

  • With the Masters right around the Amen corner, let's join the excitement with our own Masters.  (You can refer back to March 20 blog entry for more information.)
  • Besides drawing a PGA player there will be some other twists to the day.
  • Please note:  We are having this event a week before the actual Masters because so many of our ladies are participating in the first West Georgia Ladies Golf at Fairfield Plantation.
  • Angela and I have discussed the possibility of having an approach shot competition called,
 The Bubba Challenge
  • Also, if you wear an item of clothing,  hat, ball marker, etc. with the Masters logo, you will get a bonus Mulligan to be used only on the green.
  • FYI- Someone asked if the PGA player they drew misses the cut, what happens.  My answer is, "Sorry my friend, maybe next year."
  • I chose the 50 most well known golfers to draw from.  If someone wins who was not in the draw, good for them, bad for us.
  • We are playing Seminole... hopefully the greens will be rolling better.

Guest Day Results

We had two guests today.  Former Wolga member, Alice Creighton, came to play with Susan Clonts.  Also, Newnan Country Club member, Jodie Shepard, was Cheryl Drewyer's guest.
They were presented with a poker chip type ball marker.
Also, we were treated to a delicious cake baked by our own Janis Turner after play was completed.

Finally, here are the results of our Best Ball format:
1st Place-Joan Land and Shirley Payne- 62
We had a 4 way tie for 2nd place with 64 and those teams will all receive  their 2 pts.  We had to determine the places by regression.
2nd Place-Ardy Durden, Marsha Mauldin, Beth Shepard #18 hole
3rd Place- Susan Gillespie and Linda Mitchell #1 hole
4th Place- Louise Cox and Bunny Guy  #9 hole
5th Place- Bev Morris and Barbara Nadreau #9 hole

There were no birdies today or last week.
Special congrats to Marsha Mauldin as she was the only person today who made a chip in today and last week.  ($$$$)

March 28th-Guest Day

We will play on Old Course.
There will be a guest sign in sheet with our sign in sheet.

Reminder:
  • If a guest is a non Canongate member their green fees will be waived.  The cart fee is not included and is about $15.00 each.
  • It will be a Best Ball format which means both you and your partner (guest) will play their own ball as in stroke play.  Strokes are taken as they fall on the card according to handicap.  You write down each person's score on the hole.  Then drop down and write the best score of the two for your best ball score.
  • Allow plenty of time for sign ups Thursday.  Remember you must be signed up by 9:00 SHARP!
Example:
Mary and Molly are partners.
Mary gets a 7 on #1 hole, Molly gets a 5 on that hole.
If Molly gets a stroke with her handicap on that hole, you put down a 4 for that hole.
Total best ball scores and that is your final score to turn in.

Other news

One of our Wolga members, Dottie Steward, has been in the hospital for complications from her COPD.  From what I understand, she was having breathing issues and had a reaction to one of the medications.  Here is a quote from her husband that he posted this morning on facebook:

She is improving and getting stonger but not as fast as the Drs. want. They are talking Rehab to give her more concentrated attention by therapists. We will have an update by tomorrow. Keep the prayers coming. They are stronger than therapy. Dottie is a tough lady. She will b up and swinging a golf club before we know it.

March 21- Best Nine

March 21st - Best Nine- Seminole

For you brave souls who want to play with a little cold breezy conditions, the format is
Best Nine.
We will pick the best front or back nine and subtract 1/2 your handicap.

Coming soon
March 28- Guest Day-non Canongate members will not have to pay green fees, only cart fee if you ride  (This is a great time to invite a golf buddy who might be interested in joining our wonderful club)
April 4th- Mini Masters
You will draw the name of a PGA golfer who is invited to play at August National.
We will award our two players with the low gross.  (The winner will wear the coveted green piece of clothing.)
Then after the Masters is over you will add your gross score with the 4 day score of the PGA player you drew.  We will give points to the two top combined score winners.  (Those winners will be announced the following Thursday after the Masters.)
(The two low gross winners will not be eligible to win both categories.  We will drop down to the next Wolga players for the combined winners)

This should make watching the Masters more fun knowing you are paired with one of the PGA golfers.

Beat the Pros- March 14, 2013

First of all, look at Mother Nature at her best... Between #15 green and #16 at the sawgrass area we spotted this duck nesting... and low and behold she had these eggs to tend to.  The nest was beautiful with feathers softly surrounding the nest... Watch out for those little ducklings soon!!!

Here is Todd getting ready to tee of on #14.  Angela is in the foreground.
Here are the results of today's play day.

Mary Carlson
Louise Cox
Ardy Durden
Shirley Hasty

Sandra Lancaster
Joan Land
(They received 3 pts.)
We had 2 ladies lower than Angela.  They are:
Susan Clonts
Margaret Lauer
(They received 2 pts.)

Reminder:  We will be putting in your WOLGA playday scores from week to week.

Next week:  Best Nine-It will be stroke play and you will choose the better nine (front or back) and then subtract 1/2 of your handicap.
Angela has said we will more than likely be able to play in threesomes.  Hooray!!

Stay tuned for information regarding our Mini Masters... I don't have a Green Jacket to award the low gross but it's the next best thing...

2013 Wolga Opening Day

Opening day was March 7, with a wonderful breakfast prepared by the White Oak restaurant staff.  We had 56 ladies in attendance and and 32 participating in our Scramble.    All Wolga members wore special red ribbons in memory of a wonderful member, Mary Alice Ballard, who left this world too soon.    The 2013-14 season will be dedicated  to her.
